“It’s done,” I confirm into the burner phone, voice-altering software in place to change the sound of my voice.

“I need optics.”

“I blew her fucking head off and buried her in the forest. There are no optics.”

There’s a long pause and then my booking agent confirms he’ll relay the info to the client, who will make the payment to him, and then he’ll wire the balance to me. It’s how it works, so the client can’t be identified via the bank transfer, although I have other plans.

Moving back to the bedroom I quietly lean against the doorjamb and watch my angel sleep. I shake my head at the absurdity of all this. Technically, she’s dead now. Or at least that’s the word I’m putting out on the street to see what moves are made now. I’m going to pull this prick who thinks he’s a fox out of his hole. If he wanted Jasmine dead, he’ll soon think it’s done. And what set of dominoes will that set off?

Seconds later a second burner phone in my pocket vibrates, signaling the payment for the completed job. Quickly I confirm the payment of eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars to my bank account, the million dollar fee minus the fifteen percent to the booking agent.

My strides eat up the floor as I move to my computer, entering in stolen back office bank credentials to Citibank. What most people don’t realize is that this particular bank acts as a SWIFT clearing agent for a large number of bank transfers done within the U.S. and from abroad, as long as U.S. dollars are involved.

My eyes race across the screen, looking for a million dollar deposit that would have just been sent to my agent. Seeing two, I pull the bank codes and see one is from Argenta Bank, based in Antwerp, Belgium, and the other originated out of Westpac bank in Australia. The Australian payment seems to have been sent to a Hong Kong Bank while the Antwerp payment was sent to South Africa. My booking agent often says ‘as well’ at the end of sentences in place of where an American would say ‘too.’ Additionally he says and ‘you must’ many times when he’s encouraging me to do something, like try a particular cuisine in a foreign land. Both figures of speech are dead giveaways he’s South African.

But why the connection to Antwerp and why would someone in Western Europe want an eighteen-year-old girl dead?

The bank account in Antwerp is registered to a Belgium limited liability partnership. Pulling up the information on OpenCorporates.com I quickly see the name of the company is Baby’s Bears, and the corporate secretary, required by law, matches that of Jasmine’s last name, Jones.

I move quickly back to Jasmine’s room, bending down next to the bed and looking at the stuffed animal tucked under her arm. Moving in closer, I twist my body in a multitude of ways to catch the moonlight reflecting off the bear.

And then it all makes sense.
